Generally the role of social media is to connect with others. However, patients all over the world have found a way to make those outlets even more advantageous.
Patients with rare diseases are more motivated to find others with the same disease in order to facilitate research that is often difficult to conduct due to low prevalence and incidence of rare diseases. Social media is now being used as a means of finding those people and connecting with them to help get the research that they need.
