One of the greatest challenges of clinical research is patient recruitment and retention according to Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development (CSDD). To help clinical research professionals improve clinical trial management, Tufts CSDD analyzed more than 150 clinical studies comprising approximately 16,000 sites in a report released in the January/February 2013 Tufts CSDD Impact Report. Research from the study indicates that 89% of all clinical trials meet enrollment goals, yet drug developers may need to greatly expand their original timelines to achieve these goals. Additionally, the study indicates that drug sponsors and clinical research organizations have not yet embraced social media as a source of patient recruitment.
